Hello faithful!
(?)
So today I had tickets to see the President, but since I showed up only a half hour early with a ticket to the event I was not allowed to enter because the venue was at capacity. Not that big of a deal, would have been cool to see him in the flesh, but what am I going to do. I will say it was interesting to see many people being vocal outside on both sides of the health care debate. Being someone who hasn't really read the fine details of the new bill, am standing in the in-between on the issue. I respectively attempt to avoid jumping to a certain side of an issue without being properly informed. I try. I will say that I find it more entertaining to be an "Independent" than choosing one of our two parties. This way I can poke fun at both sides, and cherry pick the issues I like. For instance, not a fan of abortion, but love the planet, recycling, and finding more efficient ways to fuel our population. I'm sure that there's a label you could throw on me, but it's more fun this way. I'll also say that I do watch various news sources and read different publications. I'll bounce from CNN to FoxNews and so forth, always taking everything with a grain of salt, curious what everyone has to say. I've never been a fan of media outlets outright taking a political party stance, in either direction. Everyone's got an agenda. I don't watch Glenn Beck or Jon Stewart, even though both can be hilarious in their own ways.
Anyways, as I didn't get into President Obama's speech today, I was able to admire some of the handiwork of the protester's signs. My favorite by far was "THIS LESBIAN IS FOR LIBERTY." Hilarious, or even better they had a few saying "WEASLEY IS OUR KING" or "GRYFFINDOR SCORES!" (Harry Potter anyone?) Some people were very upset, some just look like they were bored with nothing better to do.
Also, I'm in favor of the 21 Ordinance pending in Iowa City. If you're not 21 you should not be in a bar past 10pm. They aren't that fun in the first place, expensive, and the bars really worth going to are already 21-Only anyways.
So, I've written some new poems that have gotten some surprisingly favorable responses in class lately, so I thought I might share some, bear with the length.
Weaves woven on a Dime Stolen
Please turn over the cassette tape
Side A or Side B, who really needs this
Factory made sensory escape
Of an outpouring outlet or an intending inlet
Side A or Side B, who really needs this
It’s a sad hat on a fat cat, or a sad cat with a fat hat
Just another outpouring outlet or an intending inlet
Home sweet home on your little brown door mat
It’s a sad hat on a fat cat, or a sad cat with a fat hat
This red wine spine of mine is just in the nick of time
Home sweet home on your little brown door mat
A clear design decline in what we thought was intertwined
This red wine spine of mine is just in the nick of time
Bathing under the canopy of philanthropy
A clear design decline in what we thought was intertwined
Everything’s easier when done collectively
Bathing under the canopy of philanthropy
If you can turn glass into sand
Everything’s easier when done collectively
I’ll see if I can find us some dry land
And who’s to say, when I’m late?
All these years can’t go to waste.
You’re just a fix, at which I wish,
I knew where to go with this.
Please turn over the cassette tape.
That was in pantoum form. I'll post uno mas.
Broken
Letters
Tear me open along one side
And don’t ask me to hide
Forever
Read me aloud (to yourself) tonight
But don’t ask me to cry
For broken letters
And days go by
Without a word
Sundays couldn’t be any longer
When followed by a national holiday
So, if any of my two followers are pining for more of my mediocre poetry let me know. I do have some others that I kind of like. Hope everyone is enjoying the weather!
